Walsingham Volleyball picked up a big state win on September 20, defeating St. Margaret’s in straight sets in Chismer Athletic Complex. The win avenges an August 23 defeat to St. Margaret’s and pushed the Trojans’ record to 6-3 (4-1 at home). Walsingham returns to action on Friday, September 23 when they travel to face Norfolk Collegiate in a non-conference tilt.

The first set was a back and forth affair, with Walsingham leading 8-3 early and St. Margaret’s seizing control mid-way through the set. The Trojans found themselves down 18-14, and though they climbed with one twice, St. Margaret’s surged ahead, taking a 24-21 lead. Walsingham won three straight points to stave off elimination, twice on kills by senior Lejla Topcic and once on a kill from sophomore Cat Williams. St. Margaret’s moved within a point of winning again at 25-24, before the Trojans won three straight points to claim the set, the final being won on a kill from senior Chelsea Marcombe.

The second set was far less dramatic, with the Trojans breaking an 8-8 tie with an 11-2 run. St. Margaret’s put together a late four-point run to move within 24-18, before Lejla Topcic sealed the set with a kill.
Walsingham took control early with a 6-1 run and ran their lead to 17-8 after back-to-back kills from Topcic and senior Ginny Lynch, followed by an ace from sophomore Gabby Deschenes. St. Margaret’s used a 6-2 run to move within 19-14, before Walsingham pulled away for good, using a pair of kills from Chelsea Marcombe to move ahead 24-16 and a kill from Topcic to sew up the set at 25-18.

Official stats will be on MaxPreps shortly.
