Jean Hodges McFarlane, 87, passed away in peace on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016 at home with her sons by her side. Jean lovingly shaped the minds and souls of her children and grandchildren; she was the best Mom and Amma anyone could possibly wish for and an exceptionally caring, yet strong woman.
A loving wife, Jean is survived by husband, Forrest W. McFarlane, Jr.; son Forrest W. (III) and his wife Terri of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; son John D. of Williamsburg; grandson Martin and granddaughter Morgan of Tennessee. She is also survived by her sister Jan H. Gray of Va. Beach. She was cared for by loving nieces Lesley Marks and Jill Burley; and special family friend Julie Crockett. In addition, the family wishes to thank a special loving neighbor Bonnie Llewellyn, so many caring neighbors and numerous loving family members for their thoughtful support over the years. She was predeceased by her loving daughter Ann H. McFarlane; parents Capt. George Dewey Hodges and Edna Hodges Vellines; brother George D. Hodges Jr.; and sister Doris H. Brock.
A private memorial service was held to honor her memory and burial will be at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations be made to Lee’s Friends, a group dedicated to supporting cancer patients and their families, at 7400 Hampton Blvd., Room 201, Norfolk, VA 23505 (www.leesfriends.org) or to your favorite charity.
