Three college-bound students from Yorktown, Williamsburg and Toano are the recipients of $2,500 Coast Guard Foundation Scholarships.

According to a press release from the Foundation, Kira Sislak of Yorktown was awarded a scholarship to attend James Madison University. Jemiris Gonzalez-de-Jesus of Williamsburg was awarded a scholarship to attend Thomas Nelson Community College and Sarah Becker of Toano will use her scholarship to attend Cedarville University in the fall.

The program, which currently supports 163 students by awarding a total of $576,500 in scholarships this year, was created to benefit the children of enlisted men and women who are serving or have served in the U.S. Coast Guard, whether active duty, reserve, retired or deceased, the release stated.

“The brave men and women of the Coast Guard make tremendous sacrifices daily to protect, defend and save lives,” Anne Brengle, president of the Coast Guard Foundation said in the release. “Their families and children also make sacrifices to support them in their mission. We are humbled to be able to give back to these individuals by investing in the futures of these remarkable young men and women as they pursue their dreams of higher education.”

In just over 26 years, the scholarship program has paid out more than $3.8 million to over 630 college students, the release stated.
