Mary Ruth Thorpe, beloved wife, mother and “grammy” joined her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Aug. 28 after several years of declining health. She was born in Alamance County, NC on April 14, 1929. On May 12, 1951 she married James Isaac Thorpe of Sylva, N.C. They shared 61 years of marriage together.
Mary Ruth is best known for her love and dedication to the Lord and for her Christian service. She served in a variety of capacities, including president, of Women’s Aglow in Williamsburg, VA, volunteered as a phone prayer counselor at the 700 Club and also served at the Bread of Life Book House in Toano for over 12 years.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband James in September 2012 and her eldest son James Maurice Thorpe, in January 2010.
She leaves daughter Pamela Thorpe Williams and her husband Clay of Providence Forge, VA; son Jeffery Dean Thorpe and his wife Bing Wang of Great Falls, Va., and daughter Patricia Thorpe Wallace and her husband Alex of Hamilton, Ontario; 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Friends are welcomed to share memories at the service being held at Olive Branch Christian Church, Norge, 11 AM on Wednesday, August 31st. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service. A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, September 2nd at 2 pm in Sylva, NC at Old Field Cemetery.
