Gay Stieffen Shaw, 100, died on Monday, Aug. 8, 2016.

Mrs. Shaw was born in Richmond, Va., to P.V. Stieffen and Esther Gray Stieffen.

She was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula. She graduated from Newport News High School in 1933 and from Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood University) in 1938. She formerly taught school in the Hampton school system.

She was a member of St John’s Episcopal Church, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, Merrimac Garden Club and the Lifelong Learning Center at CNU.

Gay was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William H Shaw Jr.; her daughter, Nan Niblock; and a brother, B.P. Stieffen.

She is survived by her son, William H. Shaw III (Kathryn) of Williamsburg, Va.; brothers, S. Wallace Stieffen (Jackie) of Croaker, Va., and Dennis R. Stieffen (Lynn) of Hampton, Va.; sister-in law, Mary Stieffen of Atlanta, Ga.; brother-in-law, S. Franklin Edwards of Grafton, Va.; five grandchildren, Peter G. Shaw (Kristin) of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Jeffrey W. Shaw (Barbara) of Locust Hill, Va., Robert M. Niblock (Beth) of Alexanderia, Va., Sarah K. Shaw of Oakmont Pa., and Mary A Shaw of Williamsburg, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Quinn and Nathaniel Niblock; and several nieces and nephews.

Interment will be private at Peninsula Memorial Park.
