Jean Cheatham New, 83, died after a brief illness on July 24, 2016.

She was a devoted member of Smith Memorial Baptist Church and the Women’s Missionary Union.

Mrs. New retired from Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. after more than 35 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Richard; her parents, W.W. and Frances Miles Cheatham; and her brothers, Bobby, Marshall Wade and Roy Cheatham.

Survivors include her son, Steve New (Miriam); daughter, Trudy Waters (Michael); grandsons, Tyler and Zach New, Andy and David Waters; siblings, Susie Nuckles, Richard Cheatham, James Cheatham, Joyce Sayre, Lewis Cheatham, H.T. Cheatham, Ralph Cheatham and Peggy Moore; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at Bucktrout Funeral Home, 4124 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg, Va. Funeral services, conducted by Pastor David Reid, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, at Smith Memorial Baptist Church, 6515 Richmond Road, Williamsburg, Va. Interment will follow in Williamsburg Memorial Park Cemetery.
