Joseph J. Thomas, 94, longtime employee at Yorktown Naval Weapons Station

Joseph James “Mr. Joe” Thomas, 94, of Williamsburg, Va., passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at the Hospice House of Williamsburg.

He was born April 3, 1922, in Keysville, Va. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He retired from the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station after many years of dedicated employment. He was a devoted and beloved husband and father who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Joe was preceded in death by his loving wife of 34 four years, Janet O. Thomas, and his son, Eddie L. Thomas.

He leaves to treasure his precious memories his God-daughter, Bettye Matthews Lipscomb; his cousin and caretaker, Ethel W. Hill; his aunt, Rosa Jones; his sister-in-law, Alice Irene Thomas; his special friend, Martha Epps; his nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of caring friends.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 25, 2016, at Whiting’s Funeral Home, 7005 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, Va. A celebration of Mr. Joe’s life will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, 233 Barlow Road, with the Rev. Roland Cuffee Sr. and the Rev. Haney Thomas Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at 136 Nelson Drive by noon on Tuesday.

The family requests that those who are attending please wear purple, black or white if possible.
