The James City County Fire Department responded to a house fire in Norge Thursday morning, at the 100 block of Wilson Circle.

According to a county news release, the JCCFD was dispatched to the structure fire at 6:22 a.m. Units arrived at 6:29 a.m. to find smoke showing from the front door and fire venting from the rear of the single story home.

Firefighters encountered high heat conditions in the home and cooled the fire from the exterior before entering to extinguish the fire, the release stated.

The occupants were home at the time of the fire, but had evacuated prior to the fire department’s arrival. One occupant was treated for smoke inhalation and transported to a local hospital.

The fire was brought under control in 20 minutes, but the home suffered significant fire and smoke damage throughout.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Update 12:24 pm: The JCC Fire Marshal’s investigation has determined that Thursday’s house fire started in the kitchen. According to a news release from the county, one of the residents reportedly began heating a pan of oil on the stove then went into another room. Another member of the household saw thick black smoke and alerted everyone in the house. Smoke alarms inside the residence were not working.
