Lori was a gifted teacher and an extraordinary elementary school librarian who loved her students and whose students loved her. Her greatest pleasure as a librarian was creating a lifelong joy of reading in her students. She had many friends at Gildersleeve Middle School, Sedgefield Elementary School and Poquoson Elementary School. We would like to extend a special thanks to her students who sent her get-well cards. She enjoyed reading these every day.

Lori’s smile lit up the room, and one of her greatest gifts was the ability to make everyone feel comfortable. Lori loved the beach, a good book, a cold beer, dinners with her friends, reading the newspaper cover to cover every day. And she loved her best friends: Jenifer, Jean, Donna, Mary, Teresa, Janet, Liz, Amy and Mindi.

Lori was the loving mother of her two children, Nick Velardi of Newport News, Va., and Lauren A. Velardi of Charlottesville. She also is survived by their father, Dominic Velardi of Newport News, Va.; her parents, Don and Eileen Lile of Newport News, Va.; her sister, Debbie McDonough (Chip) of Hayes; her brother, David Lile (Fred Ehlers) of Atlanta, Ga.; her nephews, Mark McDonough (Tiffany) of Gloucester and Christopher McDonough of Newport News, Va.; her great-nieces, Kylee McDonough and Kamryn McDonough; her great-nephew, Declan McDonough; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Lori’s family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the 5th floor oncology nurses at Riverside Hospital who provided such kind and exceptional care for her, and to Gayla Guishard of Grace Hospice and the wonderful Riverside Home Health Care nurses who cared for her so well.

A memorial service celebrating Lori’s life, officiated by Rev. Tom Tipton, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Christ United Methodist Church, 133 Deep Creek Road, Newport News, Va. There will be a visitation at the church starting at 10 a.m. A reception will immediately follow the service at the Warwick Yacht and Country Club, 400 Maxwell Lane, Newport News, Va.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Debbie’s Dream Foundation online at https://www.debbiesdream.org.
