Gertrude “Trudy” Croxton Bland Christian, 94, of West Point, Va., departed this life on July 6, 2016.

Trudy was born in King William County on March 30, 1922, to the late Dr. William Edward Croxton of Belmont and Sophie Robinson Croxton of Springfield. Two years later she moved to West Point, where she grew up and graduated from West Point High School. She attended The College of William and Mary, where she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority.

She married Robert Tyler Bland Jr. on Dec. 16, 1942, at Burton Parrish Church, Williamsburg, Va. She married Burnet Claiborne Christian on May 9, 1998, at St. Peter’s Church, New Kent, Va.

Trudy was preceded in death by her husbands, R. Tyler Bland Jr. and B. Claiborne Christian; a son, William Croxton Bland; and three sisters, Anne Croxton Meehan, Sophie Croxton Christian and Juliette Croxton Clothier.

She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Altar Guild and the Episcopal Church Women. She was talented with needlework designs that still are evident in her church and in the homes of family members. Trudy also was active in The Monday Club, King William Women’s Club and the DAR. All of her life she loved sewing, making clothes, needlepoint pillows, chair seats and kneelers for the church. She excelled in delicious homemade meals for all occasions and dearly loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Trudy is survived by a son, Robert Tyler Bland III (Anne), of West Point; a daughter, Beverly Bland Branch, of West Point; five grandchildren Robert Bland IV (Michele), John Bland (Rebekah), Patteson Branch III (Eliza), Tyler B. Hickey and Anne Beverly Fuller (Burton); nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Maria Croxton Walther Haff, of Rosemont, Pa.; and nine nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 10, in St. John’s Episcopal Church, 916 Main St., West Point, Va. Interment will follow in Sunny Slope Cemetery.
