Copper Fox Williamsburg will offer visitors their first taste of whiskey distilled in-house during a soft opening this weekend.
Rick Wasmund, owner of the Sperryville-based Copper Fox Distillery, said the tasting room at 901 Capitol Landing Road will be open to the public starting this Saturday. Visitors will also be able to see the distilling and bottling operations.
The distillery will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Wasmund said he is targeting July 23 for a grand opening.
Wasmund and his team have been busy transforming the former Lord Paget motel into Copper Fox Williamsburg since he purchased the complex from the City of Williamsburg in March 2015.
“I felt a strong connection with the place,” said Wasmund, who first toured the property in 2014. “I see this as such a neat opportunity that was crying out for something.”
Copper Fox Williamsburg will open as the latest in a burgeoning Tasting Trail of wineries, distilleries and breweries in the Historic Triangle.
In March, just around the corner from Copper Fox Williamsburg, Virginia Beer Co. hosted a ceremonial keg tapping — in lieu of a ribbon cutting — at its location on Second Street in York County.
York County is also home to AleWerks Brewing Co. and the future home of Brass Cannon Brewery, which is in the process of relocating from Toano.
Silver Hand Meadery, on Monticello Avenue in the City of Williamsburg, opened last fall.
