Tropical Smoothie Café in Monticello Marketplace is closed after the building caught fire early Thursday morning.

James City County fire department personnel were dispatched at 5:48 a.m. following a report of a structure fire at the café, according to fire department officials.

When crews arrived at 5:54 a.m. they found heavy smoke showing and moderate heat coming from the one-story strip mall.

Firefighters forced entry through the front and side doors of the business and found fire in the rear of the building. The flames were extinguished and the incident was declared under control at 6:24 a.m.

The café sustained heavy smoke damage. Body & Sol Tanning Boutique, located next door, sustained minor smoke damage. The fire did not spread to the next business, The Grecian Plate.

All three businesses were unoccupied at the time and no one was injured. Power at the three businesses was shut off, but maintenance workers were trying to isolate the outage to the cafe so the other two stores could open, JCC Fire Chief Ryan Ashe said.

The origin and cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Personnel from the Williamsburg Fire Department also responded to the fire.
