Retired U.S. Army Col. Howard I. Harmatz, 66, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, June 23, 2016, with his family by his side. Howard was a native of New Milford, N.J., and had been a resident of Yorktown for the past 20 years.
Following his retirement from the Army after 30 years of distinguished service, he worked as a DOD civilian employee for 12 years with USJFCOM and Joint Staff J7.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Selma Harmatz; and father-in-law, Edo Wulf.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Gisela Harmatz; daughter, Alison Harmatz; and son, Joey Harmatz, all of Yorktown; sister, Carol Miller (Ron) of New Jersey; mother-in-law, Ingeborg Wulf; brothers-in-law, Helmut Wulf (Christine) and Peter Wulf (Elke); sisters-in-law, Brigitte Scholz (Uwe) and Kerstin Lorenz (Andreas); nephew and niece, Ian Morton and Jessica Scholz of Germany; and niece, Nicole Schepker of New Mexico.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 27, followed by a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson. The Rev. Katherine Gray will be officiating services. Burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
