Boys Soccer: York’s Poelker named Group 3A Player of the Year

With the high school soccer season completed, the Virginia High School League has announced the boys soccer players named to their respective All-State teams.

In total, the Historic Triangle produced 17 All-State selections across Group 4A, 3A and 2A.

Among the All-State recipients was York (15-2-1) senior Max Poelker, who took home Group 3A Player of the Year after leading the Falcons to an appearance in the Group 3A East semifinals.

Below are the All-State selections for Group 4A, 3A and 2A:

Group 4A

Three Lafayette players and one Jamestown player earned first-team All-State honors for Group 4A.

Two Lafayette forwards, seniors Jason Eckenrode and Reeves Trott, earned first-team recognition, as well as senior midfielder Matt Beatty.

Jamestown senior defender Ben Carper was the only first-team selection for the Eagles.

Group 3A

Six Historic Triangle boys soccer players were named first-team All-State selections in Group 3A, with York senior Max Poelker earning Group 3A Player of the Year honors.

Poelker, a Longwood University commit, scored 19 goals and logged 17 assists as a captain for the Falcons this season.

Three of Poelker’s teammates at York also earned first-team All-State recognition. Senior Forwards Bailey McClure and Cameron Dail, as well as senior defender Cole Hawkins all earned first-team honors.

Tabb also had two players earn first-team honors, as senior midfielder Derek Cook and freshman defender Zach Brown made the cut.

Two other Historic Triangle players — Tabb senior forward Matt Montgomery and York junior goalkeeper Jacob Reimers — earned second-team All-State recognition.

Group 2A

Three Bruton players capped off what proved to be a historic season with first-team All-State honors for Group 2A.

Senior forward Lanson Fontaine, junior midfielder Chuckie Tenbusch and senior defender Sharif Donkor were named first-team selections.

Two other Bruton players — senior forward Michael Wilson and senior defender Courtland Ford — capped off their high school careers with second-team All-State recognition.
