The James City County Police Department will offer two free firearm safety classes on July 6 and July 28 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center at 4600 Opportunity Way.

One-session classes will be taught by Master Officer Alan McDowell and will cover basic safety, handling, storage and an overview of concealed carry laws in Virginia.

Hands-on training is not part of the class and personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location, according to a news release from the county.

The course meets the requirement for the “Documentation of Proof of Handgun Competency,” which is part of the Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit application process. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Class materials and gun locks will be provided for participants through a grant from the National Rifle Association Foundation and Project ChildSafe.

Prospective attendees must pre-register for the class, as seating is limited. Click here to register.
