James ‘Jim’ Meegan Erikson, 73, passed away suddenly on June 7, 2016. He was a resident of James City County and Norman, Okla.

Jim was a graduate of Cardinal Farley Military Academy in Rhinebeck, N.Y., and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He received an MPA from New York University and a J.D. degree from the University of Oklahoma. In addition to retiring from the U.S. Army Reserve as a lieutenant colonel, he was very proud to have served for 10 years with the New York City Police Department until an accident necessitated retirement; worked in the New York City Mayor’s Office; and to have spent the last 20 years as an attorney, first as a member of the Oklahoma State Bar, and more recently, the Virginia State Bar.

Prior to becoming an attorney, he worked in positions in government contracts and sales in telecommunications corporations. Jim was a lifelong pilot, having a goal of wanting to learn to fly as just a little boy. He earned licenses to fly single and twin engine planes, as well as helicopters. Flying brought him great joy. He was a member of many clubs and organizations, including the Army and Navy, Wings and Capitol Hill clubs.

Jim had a strong faith in God that carried him through life’s challenges. He had a great sense of humor, an unwavering loyalty, and he believed no task to be impossible, often proving that to be the case through his tenaciousness.

Jim always fought for the underdog and always believed he could win. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his daughters. Jim always provided limitless strength and support to help them reach their goals, and took great pride in their accomplishments. Jim’s generosity with all he knew had no bounds, and he had extraordinary love and compassion for every kind of animal, especially his two older dogs, his Golden Retriever, Pooh Bear, and his Labrador Retriever, Rosie.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, William James and Maude Meegan; mother, Patricia Meegan Erikson; and son-in-law, Kenneth L. Roberts.

He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Erikson Roberts and Dawn Erikson Amor, sons-in-law, Frank J. Barcalow and David P. Amor; grandchildren, Billy and Megan Roberts, Christian and Noah Amor, and Kate and Sarah Barcalow; the mother of his children and first wife, Susan Lynch; and cousin, Paul Russell.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 13, at Saint Bede Catholic Church, Williamsburg. A graveside service will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the rescue organization that is re-homing, or giving the opportunity of a forever home, to Jim’s two dogs: Almost Heavenn Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary Inc. (AHGRRS) P.O. Box 648, Capon Bridge, WV 26711.
