A group of York County elementary students recently raised $455 to donate to a local no-kill animal shelter. They were able to raise the funds by holding multiple bake sales during after-school functions.

The group, a club called Girls on the Run, is comprised of students from Dare Elementary School. Girls on the Run is part of an international initiative of the same name aimed at empowering girls in third through eighth grade to be joyful, healthy and confident, according to the organization’s website.

The girls in Dare Elementary School’s branch of the club decided they wanted to donate the money they raised to Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary (PAWS), a no-kill animal shelter. The girls recently ventured out to the shelter to present the organization with their donation and learn more about the costs associated with running the shelter.
