Swimmers, runners and cyclists will invade James City County this weekend when they participate in the Jamestown Gran Fondo and compete in the Jamestown Triathlon.

The Gran Fondo, entering its fifth year, is a leisurely-paced ride through scenic and historic areas of James City and Charles City counties. The ride will kick off at 7:30 a.m. June 11 on Green Springs Road, after which cyclists will embark on 30, 62, or 100-mile routes. Riders will be escorted by James City County police and celebrate the day with a post-ride party at Jamestown Beach Event Park.

The Jamestown Triathlon will begin at 7 a.m. and consists of a 1500-meter swim, 24-mile bike ride and 10K run. The event is the USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Region Championship and attracts top age group triathletes from the eight-state region, according to a news release from the Virginia-Maryland Triathlon Series.

β€œIn both events you will see participants who range from excited first timers to competitive athletes vying to improve their best time or win an age group title,” said Greg Hawkins, Virginia-Maryland Triathlon Series race director, in a statement.

Registration is still open for both events and volunteers are being recruited. For more information, visit www.vtsmts.com/jamestowngranfondo or www.vtsmts.com/jamestowninternational.
