Although the start of the 2016 season is more than three months away, the William & Mary football team already is generating excitement by earning a No. 13 preseason national ranking in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.

The lofty national ranking comes from Athlon, a national magazine that covers college and professional sports.

W&M will look to build on the tremendous success it enjoyed last fall, when the Tribe claimed a share of the Colonial Athletic Association title, advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs and finished the year ranked 12th in the FCS.

This fall the Tribe will return 16 starters, including eight on offense, six on defense and two on special teams.

Highlighting this impressive group are 10 all-conference standouts: wide receiver Devont Dedmon, running back Kendell Anderson, cornerback Trey Reed, tight end Andrew Caskin, quarterback Steve Cluley, place kicker Nick Dorka, Jr., punter Hunter Windmuller and offensive linemen Jerry Ugokwe, Chris Durant and Connor Hilland,

W&M will open the 2016 season at North Carolina State on Thursday, Sept. 1, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
