Devon G. Futrell was born on April 9, 1960, in Charles City, Va. She was the fifth child born to Robert L. Graham Sr. and the late Louis Carter Hundley. She departed this life on Friday, May 20, 2016, at Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton.

Devon attend Lafayette High School in Williamsburg. She worked at the College of William & Mary for fourteen years. Devon was baptized at Jerusalem Baptist Church in Charles City. Later in life she attended Life Saving Kingdom COGIC.

Devon loved and cared for her entire family. She was known as the peacemaker, but didn’t take any mess from anyone in every situation. She enjoyed dancing, bowling, playing bingo, the lottery and taking trips to the casino. Devon also loved to tell stories about her life’s experiences and her undying love for her children.

Devon is survived by her former husband, John Futrell; children, Henry W. Graham (Melissa), Teona S. Graham and Alvin V. Graham (Laura); stepson, Deante Walker; nine grandchildren, Quayshawn Walker, Kania Graham, Nashira Graham, Keon Harris, Javon Graham, Masia Thompson, Arianna Thompson, Sy’myia Stroman and Aiden J. Graham; great-grandchild, Kyliel Williams; two sisters, Sandra Edmonson (Chester) and Aveda Sweet; three brothers, Mitchell Graham, Nathan Graham and Robert L. Graham, Jr. (Tia); and nieces, nephews and a host of loving other relatives and many caring friends.

Through her humble spirit and amazing character, Devon impacted, changed and inspired every person she came in contact with to do the best with what life brought them.

Mrs. Futrell may be viewed from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. A funeral service celebrating the life she lived will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, at St. John Baptist Church, 1397 Penniman Road, Williamsburg. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at the church by 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
