David Reitz, a seasoned school administrator with experience in military communities, will take command at Bethel Manor Elementary School, near Langley Air Force Base, in July.
Reitz currently is principal at Booker T. Washington Elementary School in Suffolk, a position he’s held for three years. His appointment to Bethel Manor was approved last week by the York County School Board.
Previously Reitz was named Teacher of the Year in both the Virginia Beach and Portsmouth school divisions. And in 2010 he was recognized as the Assistant Principal of the Year for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, where he worked in two schools that have a significant military family presence, according to York County School Division officials.
Reitz was chosen for the Bethel Manor principal’s position after an extensive search process that included focus groups, surveys and three rounds of interviews.
“It has always been my dream to work for a school system with such an excellent reputation,” Reitz said in a prepared statement. “My experiences have afforded me many opportunities to grow professionally, and being selected as principal of Bethel Manor Elementary School will help me continue with this growth.”
Reitz will replace Mike Lombardo, who left the school in February to become the executive director of STEM and Performance Based Learning for the Isle of Wight County Schools.
Under Lombardo’s brief leadership — he became principal in July 2014 — Bethel Manor was named one of two National Title I Distinguished Schools in Virginia for the 2015-2016 academic year.
Lombardo’s predecessor, Betsy Poulsen, came out of retirement in February to serve as Bethel Manor’s interim principal.
