Marie Veronica Demkosky Scalsky, 84, of Williamsburg, passed away peacefully at her son’s home on Friday, May 20, 2016. She was born in Dunmore, Pa., in 1932 to Polish and Ukrainian immigrant parents. She grew up in a Polish neighborhood of coal miners.
Marie was a devout Catholic and known for her generosity and devotion to her husband and family. She is survived by her sons, Stanley J., and his wife, Terry; and Steven J., and his wife, Lucy. She will always be remembered fondly as Grammy by her 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Marie had many loves, although her husband, Stan, was always first in her heart. Her quiet nature was belied by a quick wit and clever quip that could appear out of the blue. She was a wonderful artist with paint, wood and yarn. Her gardens always bloomed with warmth and color, and her cooking was the highlight of the many close family gatherings.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 27, at Saint Bede Catholic Church, 3686 Ironbound Road, Williamsburg. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family would like to thank St. Mary’s County Hospice for their support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any hospice organization.
