College of William & Mary chefs recently prepared and served meals for a Newport News-based homeless shelter for women and children.
Chefs Stephen Losee and Stephen Murray worked with on-campus kitchen staff to prepare both a breakfast and dinner for around 75 women and children staying at Menchville House, a temporary housing and support services facility that offers education, self-improvement and employment services to its clients.
On April 25, the chefs delivered and served the food, which included eggs, pastries, fruit and breakfast potatoes for breakfast and chicken, vegetables, pasta and dessert for dinner.
“It is a privilege to be able to participate in such a great community program,” said Losee, who serves as the college’s executive chef.
The dining team donated and served this meal as part an initiative run by Sodexo, the company that operates William & Mary’s dining program.
The annual “Servathon” initiative is companywide event held each April, during which Sodexo employees around the world join forces to fight hunger in their local communities.
“Seeing the children light up and smile was the highlight of the day, and I can’t wait to volunteer at the next event,” Murray said.
