The James City County Police Department will offer several sessions of its popular firearm safety class in May and June.
The free class will be taught by Master Officer Alan McDowell, who utilizes personal and professional anecdotes as well as humor to cover basic safety, handling, storage and laws related to carrying a concealed handgun in Virginia.
Hands-on training is not part of the class and personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location, according to a news release from the county.
The class meets the requirement for the “Documentation of Proof of Handgun Competency,” which is part of the Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit application process, the release states. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance.
Classes will be held on the following dates from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Law Enforcement Center at 4600 Opportunity Way.
- May 23
- May 31
- June 15
- June 27
Class materials and gun locks will be provided for participants through a grant from the National Rifle Association Foundation and Project ChildSafe.
