Nelson E. Hobgood, 82, of Williamsburg, passed away on Sunday, May 1, 2016, after a battle of cancer.
Nelson was a native of Oxford, N.C. He was born May 31, 1933, and had been a resident of Williamsburg since 1961.
Nelson was employed by Williamsburg Fire Department in the 1970s and later by Eastern State Hospital, retiring after 27 years. Nelson was a member and deacon of Grace Baptist Church of Williamsburg.
He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 6 A.F. & A.M. of Williamsburg, Pocahontas Chapter No. 103, Order of the Eastern Star and the Moose Lodge No. 757. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life of 31 years, Kay L. Hobgood.
Survivors include their daughter, Shanna H. Johnson, son-in-law, Brian D. Johnson, and two beautiful granddaughters, Kayla D. and Kasey L. Johnson, all of Toano; and a brother, Joseph Hobgood of Hickory, N.C.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 3, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg, on Tuesday, May 3, where Eastern Star and Masonic rites will be given from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a visitation from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, in Gwynn’s Island Cemetery, Mathews, conducted by the Rev. Steve Wiley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in the memory of Nelson are made to Grace Baptist Church, 1013 Penniman Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185; or Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, VA 23188.
