Rising Ninth-Graders Eligible for Pilot Program at Warhill HS

Rising ninth-graders and their parents are invited to attend one of four information sessions, beginning tonight, on a new pilot program at Warhill High School that will give students the opportunity to “design their own paths to success.”

The Pathways Project is a grant-funded collaboration between the WJCC School Division and the College of William & Mary to “re-conceptualize and re-design high school experiences for students,” according to the school division.

WJCC Schools was one of five school divisions in the Commonwealth to have received the grant.

Students in the pilot program would select a “career cluster” that matches their interests and complete coursework – at their own pace and for graduation credits – that will allow them to achieve their goals after high school.

For example, two students in the same cluster may choose different “expressways” toward their careers. One student in a health sciences cluster may aspire to become a doctor and take rigorous classes to prepare for admission to a four-year college, while another student in the same cluster may aspire to become an EMT and take prerequisites to get into the Paramedic program at Thomas Nelson Community College.

In a presentation to the WJCC School Board on April 19, Warhill Principal Jeffrey Carroll explained the Pathways Project would emphasize mastery of content, rather than the amount of time students spend in a classroom; what they have learned, rather than what they have memorized to pass a test; and personalized learning that prepares students for their future, whether it’s a career right out of high school or higher education.

Personalized learning options include online and blended instruction; dual enrollment and early college options; project-based and community-based learning; and credit acceleration or recovery, according to the school division.

The Pathways Project “road map to success” includes four goals: students will think critically about their future, acquire skills to navigate their future, connect with industries and businesses and follow their pathway.

One hundred rising ninth-graders will be selected for the pilot program, which is set to begin this fall. Information sessions will take place at the following times and locations:

  • May 3 at 6:30 p.m. – Hornsby Middle School
  • May 4 at 6:30 p.m. – Toano Middle School
  • May 5 at 6:30 p.m. – Berkeley Middle School
  • May 17 at 6:30 p.m. – Warhill High School Auditorium
