Hospice House Appoints New Board Members

Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg recently announced the appointment of five new members to its board of directors.

Carolyn Cuthrell has joined Hospice House as both a board member and a member of the organization’s advancement committee. She has previously served as development director for Beyond Boobs!, fundraising manager at Goodwill of Central Virginia, development director at Christopher Newport University and a board member for numerous Richmond-based nonprofits.

Michael A. Gaten is a partner with Geddy, Harris, Franck & Hickman, LLP and a former assistant commonwealth’s attorney for Williamsburg-James City County. He also previously served as senior assistant commonwealth attorney for the City of Newport News and law clerk for Roanoke City Circuit Court. Gaten obtained both his undergraduate and law degrees from William & Mary and he will serve on Hospice House’s Governance Committee.

Dr. John Miller has been appointed to the board of directors to serve as it medical director. He earned his undergraduate degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and his medical degree from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. Currently he is a hematology and oncology specialist with Riverside Medical Group at Peninsula Cancer Institute in Williamsburg and is a board certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology and Hematology.

Scott Ramer, who will serve on the finance committee in addition to other board duties, is the vice president of finance at Whitley Peanut Factory – a position he has held since 2012. Previously he served as vice president of operations for the Medical Action Group.

Finally, Brett Smith has been appointed to both the board and finance committee. Smith earned a degree in Business Administration and an MBA from Old Dominion University, then began his career with SunTrust Bank. He went on to serve as the head of the Real Estate Finance Group on the Virginia Peninsula and Williamsburg. After holding several senior management positions in New York and London over the next several years, he returned to the area to become COO and co-Owner of Williamsburg-based design/build residential construction company Cleckley & Smith, Inc.
