Wanda Cales Thomas, 73, active member of the Red Hat Society and Poquoson Art League

Wanda Cales Thomas, 73, of Yorktown, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 22, 2016, at home surrounded by her children.

She was born March 7, 1943, to the late Elmer Hobart Cales and Lola Beatrice Cales Kounse and was a resident of York County for over 60 years.

She was born in Sandstone, W.Va., where she spent her childhood. Wanda attended school in Sandstone and graduated from York High School. She earned an associate’s degree from Thomas Nelson Community College. She worked in civil service for the U.S. Air Force, during which time she took an extended leave to raise her children, and retired in 2004. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and attended Congregation Zion’s Sake. She was an active member of the Red Hat Society and the Poquoson Art League.

In addition to her parents, Wanda was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, Phillip Wallace Thomas; and brother, Russell Kounse.

She is survived by her son, Wesley Andrew Thomas of Yorktown; daughter, Sibyl Elizabeth Thomas FaJohn, and her husband, Michael Edward FaJohn, of Richmond; and she also leaves her kitty, Lucy, who loved her dearly. Other survivors include many cousins who live locally and in West Virginia.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. A funeral service, officiated by Rabbi Eric Carlson, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 25, at the World Outreach Worship Center, 1233 Shields Road, Denbigh. A private burial will follow in the Thomas Family Cemetery in Tabb.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Virginia Baptist Children’s Home, P.O. Box 849, Salem, VA 24153-9928; or Peninsula Rescue Mission, P. O. Box 377, Newport News, VA 23607-9983.
