Merchants Square in Colonial Williamsburg will be filled with art Sunday, bringing more than 170 local artists from all walks of life for the Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg’s biggest fundraiser.
Art on the Square, a fundraiser and juried show now in its 53rd year, helps support community art initiatives and showcase a variety of local artists, including 3D sculptures (includes wood and metal works), jewelry, paintings and drawings, ceramics, photography and additional 2D artwork, such as fiber, printmaking and graphics.
“There is something for everyone,” said Tori Otstot, an executive board officer with the club and event co-chair.
The public is invited to walk the event for free 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The artists will have a variety of items for sale, and there will be live music.
There will also be a raffle for a painting by notable local artist Richard DePaul. The painting will be a perspective looking down Duke of Gloucester Street, which Otstot said will be a first for the event.
DePaul will also be on tap for the public to meet him.
“It’s everything people have come to expect for the show,” Otstot said.
Proceeds from artist booth fees are donated to visual and performing arts organizations throughout the Greater Williamsburg area, including Williamsburg and James City and York counties.
Otstot said the club funds projects ranging from helping with costumes for a local theater production to art supplies at a local preschool.
“We fund a lot of projects, a lot of projects for local schools,” Otstot said.
Proceeds from the raffle and show poster sales go toward scholarships offered by the club that benefit local high school seniors who plan to study art in college and pursue a career in art.
Last year, the event raised $37,000 with a lot of funds going toward local projects.
The Junior Woman’s Club of Williamsburg was formed in 1954 as a volunteer organization for civic-minded women. The nonprofit supports a wide variety of charitable organizations and community services through financial and volunteer assistance.
