A special election to fill the late John Miller’s District 1 Senate seat will take place concurrently with the upcoming presidential election.
Miller died April 4 of an apparent heart attack. Since 2008, he had represented the City of Williamsburg, parts of James City and York counties and parts of Newport News, Hampton and Suffolk in the General Assembly.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe issued a writ of special election Tuesday declaring an election will be held Nov. 8 to fill the seat. This is also the day voters across the country will choose the next president of the United States.
According to the writ, June 21 will be the filing deadline for candidates interested in running for the seat.
In addition to this special election and the presidential election, voters in James City County’s Powhatan District will elect a new school board member Nov. 8.
York County residents in District 4 will likely elect a candidate Nov. 8 to replace the late School Board member Page Minter, who also died last week. A petition for a special election has been submitted to the circuit court.
