LPGA and World Golf Hall of Fame inductee Nancy Lopez will be in Williamsburg next week for the Executive Women’s Golf Association’s 25th anniversary Celebration and Golf Experience.
While in town from April 22 to 24, Lopez will also receive EWGA’s Leadership Award for her contributions to women’s golf.
The anniversary celelbration gives women golfers the opportunity to receive instruction at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, Colonial Heritage Golf Course and Ford’s Colony Country Club over three days.
Lopez, in addition to NFL Chief Marketing Officer Dawn Hudson and former LPGA golfer Suzy Whaley, will all be giving presentations during the conference.
Lopez has started her own line of golf clubs, apparel and accessories. In 2014, Lopez also began Nancy Lopez Golf Adventures, which is a series of instructional courses tailored toward women golfers of all ages and skill levels.
The only woman to win LPGA Rookie of the Year, LPGA Player of the Year and the Vare Trophy in the same season, Lopez, who has 48 LPGA Tour wins, including three majors, will receive her award at the Saturday Night Gala on April 23 at the Williamsburg Lodge and Conference Center.
“EWGA is a great organization, so I was very honored to receive that award,” Lopez told WYDaily. “You’ve got names like Annika [Sorenstam] and Lorena [Ochoa], so it’s kind of nice to have your name up beside their names for an award like this.”
In her nearly 30 years as a professional golfer, Lopez found golf to be an empowering game. Instead of being “on call” for her three children and husband, she was able to recharge and find peace alone on golf courses around the world.
Lopez thinks women could benefit from taking time for themselves, and she believes golf might be a perfect fit.
“A lot of women don’t take time for themselves to enjoy something like golf,” she said. “I think women always take care of everyone else in their families before they take care of themselves. Golf is a different kind of sport. You can enjoy the fairways and walking around the course.”
It’s this love of golf Lopez is hoping to share with women from around the Historic Triangle during the EWGA 25th Anniversary Celebration.
Those participating in the EWGA Conference will receive extensive golf instruction and will play golf at various Historic Triangle golf courses. They will also have the opportunity to explore Colonial Williamsburg and the surrounding area.
Registration for non-members costs $695, while EWGA member pricing ranges from $620 to $670 for the three-day event. To register, click here.
