Bruton dropped its first game of the season Monday, falling 3-1 on the road against Smithfield.

The Panthers found themselves a man down in the first half after earning a red card around the 25th minute. To make matters worse, Bruton found itself trailing Smithfield 1-0 by halftime.

With Bruton playing down a man, Smithfield was able to open up scoring opportunities and record back-to-back goals in the second half.

Trailing 3-0 in the 72nd minute, Bruton connected passes down the field and earned a corner kick.

Junior Andrea Abriani sent the corner sailing toward the back post, where Shane Bowyer was waiting to head the ball into the back of the net for Bruton’s only goal of the game.

Bruton (3-1) will try to rebound Thursday evening at home against Grafton.
