Page Minter, who has represented District 4 on the York County School Board for more than 20 years, has died, the York County School Division announced Tuesday.

Minter, 69, was first elected in 1995, the first year elections were held for the School Board, and was elected to a sixth term in November.

“He was a kind, caring and respected leader as well as a treasured friend,” Superintendent Victor Shandor said in a Facebook post from the school division.

In addition to his role on the York County School Board, he served on the New Horizons Regional Education Center Board of Trustees for 18 years, including 16 years as chair.

This past year, he was inducted into the Virginia Career and Technical Education Hall of Fame for his outstanding leadership and service.

“I’m still as enthusiastic today as I was the first time, if not more,” Minter told WYDaily prior to the recent election. “It’s just great to be a part of a team that is trying to pull together in the same direction.”

Minter first came to the Peninsula in 1967 to work at the Newport News Shipyard but left 10 years later to take a job in Alabama. He and his family returned to the Shipyard in 1987 and moved to Dare, choosing to settle in York County because of the schools.

Minter said he decided to run for the School Board after mowing the lawn one night in 1995, later telling his wife that if he could volunteer anywhere, he would give his time to “the youth and the future.”

Prior to being re-elected, Minter noted the importance of guiding residents in the right direction when they share their concerns, making sure all schools are well-maintained and encouraging collaboration between the School Board, the Board of Supervisors and state legislators.

Minter said heightening awareness for career and technical education and its importance to the future is one of his most important accomplishments on the School Board.

No funeral arrangements have been announced. WYDaily will update with that information when it becomes available.
