Walsingham Academy’s offense exploded during a 12-2 win at home against Peninsula Catholic on Tuesday.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Walsingham proceeded to score 12 of the final 13 runs to close out the game in five innings because of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 10-run rule.
Tanner Schobel started the scoring for Walsingham in the bottom of the first inning, scoring off a fielding error by Peninsula Catholic. On the next play, Tredell Blow scored off an RBI groundout by Zach Stanko.
Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning, Walsingham blew the game open thanks to timely hitting.
Three consecutive batters reached base to open the inning, setting up Schobel to draw a bases-loaded walk that brought home Christian Carter. Beau LeJeune followed up the walk with an RBI single to right field that scored Jason Covaney.
Tredell Blow kept the momentum going with the biggest hit of the day, smacking a grand slam over the right-field fence to push Walsingham’s lead to 8-1.
After allowing a single run in the top of the third inning, J.J. Burns continued Walsingham’s offensive showcase by belting a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, with Walsingham needing two runs to close the game out because of the 10-run rule, Schobel scored from third base on a passed ball.
Later in the inning, Burns hit a sacrifice fly that allowed LeJeune to score the game’s final run.
Walsingham (5-5) will face a quick turnaround as the Trojans host Norfolk Christian on Wednesday.
