A bakery with a loyal following in Newport News is bringing its rich desserts to Williamsburg at its new location in New Town.

Scratch Bakery is located in the former Williamsburg Cupcake storefront, next to El Tapatio Mexican Restaurant and around the corner from Regal Cinemas.

The bakery, which opened last summer but closed for the winter, hosted a ribbon-cutting March 23 to celebrate its grand reopening.

“We wanted to introduce ourselves to the community. We really didn’t have a chance to do that initially,” co-owner Lashonda Sanford said.

She said Scratch Bakery is unique from other bakeries in the area because it is a “full-service bakery.” The bakery sells custom cakes, cupcakes, bread pudding, banana pudding, pound cake and more.

Sanford said she got hooked on baking desserts after she grated carrots and made cream cheese from scratch for a carrot cake. At Scratch Bakery, customers can enjoy treats that people “have a hard time finding” today, such as pineapple upside-down cake.

“My main goal is to make it taste delicious and make it like your grandmother used to make it,” Sanford said.

She plans to introduce chicken salad sandwiches, which have been well-received in Newport News, at the New Town location soon. She said she hopes Scratch Bakery can nurture the same “love affair” with Williamsburg as it has in Newport News.

“We want to be that neighborhood bakery,” Sanford said. “We want to be the place where people walk in the door and we know their name.”
