Williamsburg residents looking to learn the basics of firearm safety can attend a free class organized by the James City County Police Department next month.
The class will be taught by Master Officer Alan McDowell, who utilizes personal and professional anecdotes as well as humor to cover basic safety, handling, storage and laws related to carrying a concealed handgun in Virginia.
The class does not include hands-on training, and personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location, according to a news release from the county.
There will be two opportunities to take the class: 6:30 to 9 p.m. April 4 and 6:30 to 9 p.m. April 26. Both classes will be held at the Law Enforcement Center at 4600 Opportunity Way.
Class materials and gun locks for participants are provided via a grant from the National Rifle Association Foundation and Project ChildSafe.
Prospective attendees must pre-register for the class, as seating is limited.
