While Bruton stayed competitive in individual matches during Wednesday's home match against Mathews, the Panthers were unable to keep pace overall during an 8-1 loss.

Singles proved to be an uphill battle for Bruton, as the Panthers suffered a quick loss at No. 2 with Natalie Cross losing 6-1, 6-3 to Ashley Hudgins.

While Cross was preparing to walk off her court, Bruton's No. 1 Leanna Troutman wrapped up a 6-1, 6-1 loss against Morgan Johnson of Mathews.

The Panthers next suffered a loss at No. 4 singles, with Olivia Garcia falling 6-1, 6-1 to Maddie Brown. Bruton's fourth loss came moments later at No. 6, as Libby Bieri lost 6-1, 6-3 to Madelyn Johnson.

Bruton's No. 5 Ashley Ivanoff put up a strong fight in her first set against Emma Wood, but ended up falling 6-4, 6-2.

Helen McCarthy, Bruton's No. 3 singles player, earned the only set victory for the Panthers. After defeating Rachel Stewart 7-5 in the first set, McCarthy fell 2-6 in the second set and 2-10 in the third set tiebreaker.

The match of the day came in No. 1 doubles, when Troutman and Cross played won a tight contest against Johnson and Hudgins.

After opening the match 5-2, the Mathews duo battled back and took a 6-5 lead. The Panthers rallied to tie the match at 7-7, eventually converting a break point to go up 8-7 and capping the victory with a Troutman backhand up the line.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, the other two doubles matches did not go as smoothly, with Bruton losing No. 2 doubles 8-1 and No. 3 doubles 8-4.

Bruton (0-2) faces a quick turnaround as the Panthers prepare to visit Windsor on Thursday.

Clover Hill Tops Grafton in Season Opener

Grafton's girls tennis team opened its season Wednesday with a 6-3 loss to Clover Hill at home.

The Clippers won a pair of singles matches, keeping them mathematically alive heading into doubles.

Though they needed to sweep doubles to secure a win, the Clippers dropped the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches.

Grafton (0-1) will continue its season on the road against Denbigh on Monday.

York Opens Season With Sweep of New Kent

York's tennis season opened in strong fashion as the Falcons swept New Kent at home on Wednesday.

The Falcons dropped just six games through singles and doubles, marking a dominating performance against the Trojans.

York (1-0) will visit Warhill on April 12 looking to remain perfect on the season.
