Wind gusts upwards of 20 mph and temperatures in the 40s could not slow down Warhill's boys tennis team from cruising past Hopewell 9-0 at home on Monday.
Warhill Coach Bob Hyatt said Monday's 9-0 win against Hopewell marked the first time in recent memory the Lions have completely swept an opponent.
The Lions started quick, as Bruce Pauls earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Hopewell's No. 2 Eric Phillips in just over an hour. Moments later, Warhill's No. 5 Brian Shartzer capped off a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jeremiah Thomas.
From there, Warhill's wins continued piling up in quick succession. With roughly five minutes separating each win, the Lions got wins from Sam Hrncir at No. 4, Jackson Cummins at No. 1 and Cooper Gravel at No. 3.
While the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams of Warhill and Hopewell warmed up on the center two courts, Warhill's No. 6 singles player Bradley Turner worked to close out his match. Shortly before 6 p.m., Turner shook hands with his opponent, Tyler Mackin, following a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Despite the win being wrapped up after singles play, the Lions wasted no time putting the match to rest in doubles.
Cummins and Hrncir made quick work of Terry and Phillips, knocking off Hopewell's No. 1 doubles team 8-2 in just over 30 minutes. Similarly, Shartzer and Turner had a flawless doubles match at No. 3, beating Hopewell's duo 8-0.
The successful day ended with Warhill's No. 2 doubles team of Pauls and Gravel beating Hopewell's final pair of players 8-5.
Warhill (1-1) will have a long layoff before resuming its season on the road against Gloucester on March 28.
