Grafton and Poquoson traded runs in the first inning, with Kayley Cox and Tara Deck each driving in a run for the Clippers in the top of the first.

After allowing two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Cox settled down and pitched six consecutive scoreless innings for the Clippers, allowing five total hits and striking out five batters.

With both teams struggling to find offense, Hallingstad stepped to the plate and drove in a run that put Grafton on top 3-2, which would hold as the final score.

Smithfield Homers Too Much for Tabb to Handle

Smithfield batters smacked three home runs, including a grand slam by Meredith Oliver, to defeat Tabb 14-9 on the road Wednesday.

After Smithfield jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Tabb responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning on that back of a two-run ground out by Emily Gavin.

Smithfield tacked on a run in the second inning before posting five runs in the top of the third inning. Oliver smacked a grand slam, which was followed two at bats later by a Kelsey Davenport home run to put the Packers up 7-4.

The Tigers added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to pull within one run, but the Packers added another four runs in the top of the fourth inning to blow the game open.

Smithfield added three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach for the Tigers.

Tabb (1-1) will have a day off before traveling to play New Kent on Friday.
