Bruton alumnus and Christopher Newport University sophomore Marcus Carter put together back-to-back double-double performances to help lead the Captains to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Other Historic Triangle athletes had standout performances in baseball, men’s basketball and softball.

  • Longwood University freshman Eric Harp (York) earned his first collegiate win during a March 1 game against Virginia Commonwealth University. Harp threw two innings, allowing one hit and one earned run in the process.
  • William & Mary freshman Matthew Keane (Lafayette) went 2-for-4 with an RBI during a March 1 loss against the University of Virginia.
  • Barton College freshman Ricks Dearing (Grafton) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored during a March 1 win against UNC Pembroke. He put together an identical stat line during a March 6 win against Limestone.
  • Ferrum College junior Lane Deaver (Grafton) went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs during a  March 5 win against Methodist. He also went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs during a March 6 win against Methodist.
  • Christopher Newport University senior Tommy Vitaletti (Jamestown) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI during a March 3 win against Bridgewater.
  • Christopher Newport University senior Adam Emerson (Lafayette) earned his third save of the season, striking out two batters in a scoreless inning during a March 3 win against Bridgewater. He also earned his first win of the season during a March 5 victory against Newmann.

Men’s Basketball

  • Christopher Newport University sophomore Marcus Carter (Bruton) put up a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds during a March 4 win against Lycoming. He put up another double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds during a March 5 win against NYU in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.


  • Campbell University freshman Christa Hall (Grafton) hit a three-run home run during a March 5 loss to Appalachian State.
  • Elon University sophomore Hannah Olson (Grafton) went 2-for-3 with an RBI during a March 6 loss against USC Upstate.
  • Christopher Newport University sophomore Lia Batchelor (York) went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs during a March 2 win against Randolph-Macon. She also went 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs during a March 6 win against Shenandoah University.
  • Christopher Newport University junior Tara Heatwole (Jamestown) moved to 3-0 on the season after allowing four runs during seven innings of work in a March 2 win against Randolph-Macon. She won her fourth game of the season after allowing one run over four innings during a March 6 win against Shenandoah University.
  • Christopher Newport University senior Hannah Cook (Grafton) went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs during a March 2 win against Randolph-Macon.
