Doris Giddens Hvazda, 96, died Friday, March 4, 2016, in Brookdale of Williamsburg, where she received care from Gentiva Hospice.
Born November 26, 1919, in Phillipsburg, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Warren and Calla (Male) Giddens. Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Wassyl John Hvazda, and is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Charles A. McFadden, also of Williamsburg.
Doris graduated from Easton High School, Pa., in 1937, and then attended Churchman Business School before becoming an executive secretary to the president of the Metropolitan Edison Company. She taught Sunday School and served on the church council at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Northampton, Pa.
Throughout her life, Doris easily gained friendships. She enjoyed travel, whether it was a Caribbean cruise or a trip to see a Broadway play. Later in life, her passion for reading was renewed and included reading Time magazine from cover to cover, after which she engaged in many a political discussion with her son-in-law. Doris always had a deep love for animals.
The family wishes to thank her home caregivers, who were so supportive in this last year.
A memorial service to celebrate Doris’ life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Brookdale of Williamsburg Assisted Living, Brandon House, 3800 Treyburn Drive, Williamsburg. Inurnment will be held in St. Bede’s columbarium at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heritage Humane Society, 430 Waller Mill Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185; or to your local shelter.
