Bruton’s basketball season ended with a 69-53 loss to Martinsville on Saturday at the Salem Civic Center in the Virginia High School League Group 2A Tournament quarterfinals.

The Panthers fell in a hole early against Martinsville, winding up down 18-3 after the first quarter.

And while Bruton played better over the final three quarters, the slow first quarter proved too much to overcome.

Bruton played even with Martinsville in the second quarter and entered halftime down 35-20.

Despite 16 points from Daniel Jones and 12 points from Jalen Carr, Bruton was outscored in the second half 34-33 as Martinsville was able to cruise to the victory and end the Panthers’ season.

Bruton finishes its season with a record of 18-8.
