vdotMonday marked the start of a road widening project on the Route 199 westbound off-ramp onto Richmond Road (U.S. Route 60) that will continue through early to mid-summer.

The purpose of this project is to mitigate congestion on the off-ramp by increasing the pavement width to the west toward the existing on-ramp in order to allow for the construction of exclusive left and right turn lanes, according to Virginia Department of Transportation Public Relations Specialist Brittany Nichols.

J.S.G. Corporation, based in Williamsburg, was awarded the $415,000 construction contract.

The initial work includes drainage pipe installation that will require weekday daytime closures of the on-ramp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Daytime closures will also eventually take place on the off-ramp at a later phase of the project.

Signs will be in place to alert motorists of the ramp closure and direct both westbound and eastbound traffic on a detour to Lightfoot Road.
