2016 Presidential Primary: A Guide to Today’s Election

WYDaily.com is your source for free news and information in Williamsburg, James City & York Counties.

electionIt is Super Tuesday, which means it is Virginia’s turn to say which presidential candidates should win the Democratic and Republican nominations.

Polls open at 6 a.m. today and close at 7 p.m. Voters must bring a Virginia driver’s license or another form of government identification, which could be a military ID, passport, employer ID or student ID.

School will be in session today. Williamsburg-James City County public schools will open two hours late while York County public schools will open on time.

James City County residents voting at a school polling place are advised to cast a ballot between 6 and 9 a.m. or 4:30 and 7 p.m. In York County, residents are encouraged to vote during the middle of the day.

The recommended time frame will reduce the likelihood of voters competing with school traffic during student drop-off and pick-up, according to the James City County and York registrar’s offices.

It is a dual presidential primary, meaning the Democratic party and the Republican party are holding primary elections simultaneously in Virginia. Residents do not register to vote with a party and are thus able to vote in either primary.

Voters who choose to cast a ballot in the Republican primary will not have to sign a Statement of Affiliation, also known as a “loyalty oath,” which was required by the Republican Party of Virginia before it was scrapped in late January.

Election officials in the Historic Triangle say they have prepared for a high voter turnout. In James City County, enough ballots have been ordered for a 65 percent turnout.

The candidates will be listed on the ballots in the following random order for the Democratic and Republican primaries. Several people who are no longer candidates will appear on the ballots, as they withdrew from the race after the ballots were printed; those names will be italicized below.
