Mary Irella ‘Miss Irella’ Lawson Bloxom, beloved mother and grandmother, left her earthly home and went to be with her Lord and Savior in heaven on Friday, February 26, 2016, at Dominion Village in Poquoson after a lengthy illness.
She was born February 8, 1920, to Robert Crooks and Sue Carmines Lawson in what was then known as Messick. She weighed less than three pounds at birth and was truly a special gift from God.
Miss Irella graduated from Poquoson High School and Mary Washington College. She retired from First Virginia Bank after many years of service. She was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a member of the Marion Page Circle, and a past member of the Poquoson Woman’s Club. She was known throughout the community for her personal integrity, devotion to duty and service to others.
Miss Irella was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 69 years, Marvin ‘Buddy’ Bloxom; son, Harry ‘Skip’ Bloxom; and sister, Rose Conner, and her husband, James.
She is survived by sons, Robert M. Bloxom and his wife, Gail, of Mooresville, N.C., and Gene W. Bloxom, and his wife, Priscille, of Poquoson; daughter, Betty Forrest, and her husband, Hugh, of Poquoson; grandchildren, Scott Bloxom (Cindy), Kelly Brown, Rick Bloxom, Sheila Huff (Mark), Ilene Stephan (Chris), Rachel Harrell (Bryan), Jeremy Bloxom (Jennifer), Brian Bloxom and Ben Huffman; nephew, James Conner Jr. (Carolyn); 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, February 28, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, Poquoson, and other times, at Gene and Priscille’s home. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 29, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Poquoson, with the Rev. Carol Bookwalter and the Rev. Charles Stacey. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
