The Bruton girls basketball team earned its second Conference 33 championship in the past three years Wednesday night when the Panthers cruised past Maggie Walker 44-21 at home.

Bruton was unable to compete for a Conference 33 championship last year after snow caused the cancellation of the entire tournament.

While Bruton's third-year coach Terrence Green said winning three conference titles in a row would have been nice, he joked taking two out of three is probably good enough.

Bruton was more than good enough to earn the victory in what appeared to be an overwhelmed Maggie Walker team on Wednesday.

After an even first couple of minutes to the game, Bruton began exerting its dominance against the Green Dragons. The Panthers put together a 9-0 run to close out the quarter and take a 13-4 lead heading into the second quarter.

Maggie Walker began finding holes against Bruton's full-court press and went on a 7-1 run to open the second quarter. With Bruton's lead cut to three points, the Panthers responded with a timely 8-0 run that made the score 22-11.

Leading the second-quarter run for Bruton was Gabby Calloway, who splashed three consecutive 3-pointers during what proved an 11-point quarter for the talented sophomore.

By halftime, Bruton's lead over Maggie Walker ballooned to 30-12 and the game was well in hand.

Bruton's defense almost completely shut down Maggie Walker in the second half, holding the Green Dragons to a combined nine points over the final two quarters of play.

A 12-point third quarter for the Panthers clinched the win, as reserve players for Bruton finished the game in the fourth quarter and handed Bruton the conference crown.

"We didn't really have a game plan going into today," Green said. "I told the girls, 'Today's a special day. Let's go out and get the job done — not have fun, get the job done.'"

That attitude of getting the job done will be a consistent theme for Bruton (16-5), which will host a team still to be determined during Friday's opening game in the Group 2A East tournament.
