On Wednesday, Hampton Roads Academy senior Scott Jones officially signed to play football at Duke University.
Jones, a Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association first-team All-State defensive lineman in 2015, was officially accepted to Duke in December and was offered a spot on the team as a preferred walk-on.
A preferred walk-on is a player who is assured a spot on a team, but the coach is unable or unwilling to offer an athletic scholarship to that player.
Despite not being offered a scholarship spot on the team, Jones was committed to playing for the Blue Devils and take advantage of Duke’s well-renowned academics.
“Scott is one of those rare combinations of a great leader, athlete and student,” said Bryce Kiser, Hampton Roads Academy head football coach. “We have been fortunate to be able to rely upon him to do so much for us over his four year career.”
Jones served as a captain for the Navigators in 2015 while accumulating 65 tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. In his career, he has 214 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, 28 quarterback hurries and seven sacks.
