Historic Triangle residents looking for free tax preparation assistance have several options to turn to throughout the area in the coming months.
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program
Locals can take advantage of free income tax return preparation and electronic filing by IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers through the VITA program.
Services are geared toward individuals who would find the cost of tax assistance burdensome, but are available to all citizens.
Interested parties should bring a government picture ID such as a driver’s license, social security cards, income W-2/1099 forms, healthcare insurance info forms, identity theft PIN, receipts for deductions, bank account information and 2013 federal and state tax returns to the following locations for assistance.
- Abram Frink Jr. Community Center: Feb. 9, 16 and 23 from 2 to 5:30 p.m.
- Quarterpath Recreation Center: Saturdays from Feb. 2 through April 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Colonial Williamsburg’s Bruton Heights Education Center: Tuesdays and Thursdays through April 15 from 2 to 5:30 p.m.
- James City County Recreation Center: Feb. 9 from 2 to 5:30 p.m. and every Wednesday through April 15 from 2 to 5:30 p.m.
Taxpayers will be served on a first come, first served basis.
VITA at the Williamsburg-James City County Community Action Agency
The Williamsburg-James City County Community Action Agency is offering free income tax preparation services for low- and moderate-income citizens in the area. Individuals using the service could receive a refund in seven to 10 business days via direct deposit.
Low- and moderate-income filers could also be eligible to receive an Earned Income Tax Credit. Find out if you qualify by visiting the Internal Revenue Service’s website.

Tax-Aide is a program sponsored by the AARP Foundation to hels seniors and low and moderate income taxpayers of all ages. Service is on a first come, first served basis, but those older than 59 years of age are given a limited priority.
Counselors are volunteers who are certified annually after passing a comprehensive IRS test. They accept no gifts or gratuities for their services. They are prepared to complete all common forms and schedules for individual tax returns. Business forms will normally be limited to Schedules C-EZ, D and SE.
Clients who are delinquent in the filing of returns for past years will be assisted only if they have all the required background materials available and can be helped without inconvenience to others.
Hours and locations through April 15:
- Williamsburg Library: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday from 1o a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- James City County Library: Tuesdays and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Appointments may be scheduled for both library locations by calling 757-259-4072 beginning Feb. 15 during site hours.
Taxpayers requiring preparation of previous year returns (2012, 2013, and 2014) or amendments will be asked to make appointments for later in the tax season. Priority is given to 2015 returns.
