More than 25 Historic Triangle wrestlers will advance to the Group 4A East tournament next weekend after strong performances during Saturday’s Conference 18 tournament at Smithfield.
Grafton finished in second place during the Conference 18 tournament, while Lafayette took third place as a team. Jamestown finished fifth in the tournament.
Four Grafton wrestlers took first place in their respective weight classes. Nick Faison took first place at 126 pounds, Aaron Daugherty won at 145, Zach Leherr placed first at 160 and Allen Blaha won at 220 pounds.
Three Grafton grapplers finished as runners-up during the tournament as Braxton Fell placed second at 152, Luke Armstrong took second at 170 and Julian Miller placed second at 285.
Other Grafton wrestlers to advance to the Group 4A East tournament were Jacob Carasquillo at 132, Jeremiah Vivero at 138 and Sam Smyth at 182.
Lafayette’s lone winner on Saturday was Anthony Anderson at 106 pounds.
The Rams had three wrestlers earn second-place finishes — Caleb Troup at 113, Kane Hurt at 145 and August Tremblay at 195.
Six other Lafayette wrestlers will advance to the region tournament. Kevin Nguyen at 152, Griffin Hurt at 160, Ryan Davis at 170, Lorenzo McGilvary at 182, Keirien Simpson at 220 and Noah Cotton at 285 will all represent Lafayette next weekend.
Jamestown also had one wrestler take first place during Saturday’s tournament. Travis Heatwole took first place at 182 pounds.
Three other Jamestown grapplers earned runner-up finishes as Matthew Landreneau finished second at 106, Connor Hurley took second at 120 and Niko Naranjo placed second at 132. Randy Frontera will also reach the regional tournament for Jamestown at 113 pounds.
Tabb, York Advance Double-Digit Wrestlers to Regional
York and Tabb will each send at least 10 wrestlers to next weekend’s Group 3A East tournament.
The Falcons finished in second place during Saturday’s Conference 27 tournament at Phoebus, while the Tigers took third place overall as a team.
Two York wrestlers won their weight classes. Tommy Ciccone took first place at 145 pounds, while Noah Passcarella won at 195 pounds.
Seven other York wrestlers placed second in their weight classes — Joe Thompson at 120, Luke Grubbs at 126, Mitchell Hamilton at 138, Kameron Ashe at 152, Matt Wakelyn at 160, Mike Cawley at 170 and Nick Grubbs at 220.
Other York wrestlers to advance to the Group 3A East tournament were Mark Thompson at 113, Mike Holliday at 132, Xedrix Barbeyto at 182 and Dan Trayner at 285.
Three Tabb wrestlers took home victories in their respective weight classes. Will Speight took first place at 126, Bryce Reid won at 132 and Christian Payne finished first at 171.
Jake Roberts placed second at 182 pounds, while three other Tabb wrestlers — Robert Locher at 138, Antonio Gaines at 195 and Zach Schiele at 285 — placed third. Caitlyn Criner finished fourth at 106, and Curtis Cole placed fourth at 160.
Warhill Sends 11 to Group 3A East Tournament
Warhill advanced 11 wrestlers to next weekend’s Group 3A East tournament after solid performances in Friday’s Conference 25 tournament.
The lone wrestler to win their respective weight class for Warhill was Trey Drummond at 120 pounds.
Two other Warhill wrestlers earned second-place finishes — Malik Barr at 145 and Doc Branscome at 220 pounds.
Other Warhill wrestlers to advance to the regional tournament were Hunter Smith, Justin Cooper, Jordan Weeks, Wes Whitehurst, Dylan Morris, Jack Wright, Bryant Walker and Josh Farley.
Bruton to Send Eight to Group 2A East Tournament
Bruton had eight wrestlers advance to the Group 2A East tournament during Saturday’s Conference 33 tournament at Maggie Walker.
Two Panthers took first place in their respective weight classes, as Ian Gruver won at 152 and Elijah Graves won at 220.
Three Bruton wrestlers placed second as Ben Marshall was a runner-up at 120, Isaiah Hicks finished second at 132 and Conner Bauske placed second at 195.
Bruton had three other wrestlers advance to the regional tournament – Caleb Filicko at 126, Irvin Boites at 170 and Decon Lewis at 182.
