Celebrate Black History Month with Colonial Williamsburg

WYDaily.com is your source for free news and information in Williamsburg, James City & York Counties.

During the 18th century, Virginia was home to a large number of people of African descent. Enslaved people were considered chattel property, while free blacks were disenfranchised from the political process. Throughout the month, special programs will be offered that explore various stories of the people and culture. Although colonial black Virginians struggled to become recognized as Americans, their active efforts in seeking freedom and equality serve as a model of citizenship. Join Colonial Williamsburg on this journey to explore the story of a people who challenged the political and societal norms to create a better future for themselves and the next generation.
